Elementary School Lunch: 02/04 - Not Actually Tofu

Food, JapanKristina PinoComment

Today was another nice, sunny day, so I was pretty glad to get a fresh-tasting Chinese-style lunch with a frosty dessert. Our timing has been pretty good, and tomorrow we're getting a stew sort of lunch and there's snow on the radar, so it looks like our streak will continue.

Today we had one of our Chinese-style bowls of stewed veggies and seafood, which comprised quail eggs, shrimp, squid, snap peas, napa cabbage, bamboo, cloud ear fungus, shiitake mushroom, scallops, carrot, taro root, and onion. Loads of great stuff in there. Our salad was just some cabbage, bean sprouts, and bits of chicken with a veggie dressing, and our dessert was annin tofu, which is not actually tofu at all - it just kinda looks like it. Its ingredients are agar and almond, and probably sugar, with the consistency of a jelly (jelly as in gelatin). It had been frozen, so it was nice and frosty by the time we ate.
