Elementary School Lunch: 09/09 - chestnuts

Hello, I hope you've all had a great weekend! Folks are pretty happy here in Japan following the announcement that Tokyo will be hosting the 2020 Olympics... that's been a big topic in the staff room!

Today's lunch looks rather simple - it's only two plates, plus the milk (not pictured) that I didn't drink. The bowl has mixed rice, which prominently featured chestnuts . In Japan, chestnuts signify autumn, and today was pretty much the perfect day to serve them since the weather was nice and cool. We're really feeling the season change these days.

The other plate had one of our regular salads - leaves, cucumber, carrots, and seasoned in-house, accompanied by a bit of chicken kara-age (fried chicken). Everything was real tasty, and where the ladies in the staff room usually leave a bunch of rice at the end of their meals, everyone polished off their bowls - we had no leftovers, for the first time that I can think of.

Other elements of the mixed rice: konjac, edamame, mushroom, shredded pork meat.
