Elementary School Lunch: 06/05 - Chinese with a side of chicken

Food, JapanKristina PinoComment

Today's lunch featured a gooey bowl of Chinese-style mixed pork and veggies, with a couple of sneaky quail eggs. We had rice on the side, and some salad to go with it. This is one of those dishes that we eat by dumping the contents of the bowl, little bit little, into the rice tray and having those together.

The salad itself was crunchy, and had some pieces of chicken breast mixed in. It's just too bad we're back to regular ol' cucumbers. The ones that the fifth graders prepared that one time were just so tasty, these just don't compare. And of course, the highlight of this meal for me was the inclusion of dessert - a small, juicy orange. It was perfect - absolutely divine.

Today is the first day that I actually went and had lunch with one of my classes. The students eat in their home rooms, their desks separated into lunch groups forming a few larger "tables." Each lunch group then assigns different clean-up duties for each person involved; for example, one student will collect all the empty rice trays, another collects the bowls, and so on. I also learned today that I'm a total wuss - while I was totally stuffed after eating just the food on my tray, the little girl next to me actually went for seconds and had a second helping of rice and the mixed bowl without batting an eye. Kids are incredible...
